Beyond the Office: What Our Flaming Gorge Trip Reminded Us About Connection
There’s something about stepping away from the office, leaving the laptops behind, and spending a few days together in the great outdoors that reminds you just how important it is to know the people you work alongside, not just as coworkers, but as people.
Recently, our Life Empowered Therapy Services team packed up and headed to Flaming Gorge for a company trip filled with camping, rafting, plenty of laughter, and a whole lot of time together outside of our usual routines.
And while the rafting adventure was definitely a highlight, the best part of the trip wasn’t necessarily what we did. It was getting to see the people behind the roles.
From Therapists and Admins to Teammates
In our day-to-day work, it can be easy to get caught up in titles and responsibilities.
Therapist. Intern. Administrator. Supervisor. Billing. Scheduling.
We spend our days helping clients, answering phones, navigating schedules, completing documentation, and supporting people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
But outside of the office, those titles matter a little less.
On the river, we were simply a group of people figuring things out together, laughing at the unexpected moments, enjoying the scenery, and making memories.
Camping has a funny way of doing that.
So does rafting.
You quickly learn that the person you usually see sitting behind a computer or walking into the office has a whole personality, sense of humor, and story that you may never get to see during a normal workday.
A Little Adventure Goes a Long Way
Rafting gave us the perfect excuse to get out of our comfort zones and experience something together.
There was excitement, nervousness, laughter, and plenty of moments where we had to rely on each other.
And honestly, isn’t that a little bit like what makes a great team?
You communicate.
You encourage each other.
You laugh when things don’t go exactly according to plan.
You celebrate the little victories.
And sometimes, you just hold on and enjoy the ride.
Spending time together outside of work gave us an opportunity to strengthen relationships in a way that a meeting or team lunch simply can’t replicate.
Why Relationships Matter
As a mental health organization, we talk about connection all the time.
We know that relationships matter. We know that feeling seen, understood, supported, and valued can make an enormous difference in someone’s life.
That doesn’t stop being true just because we’re at work.
In fact, we believe it’s important for the people providing care and support to experience that same sense of connection within their own team.
When we know each other as people, we communicate better. We support one another better. We laugh together, navigate challenges together, and create a stronger environment for everyone around us—including the clients we serve.
Our work is deeply human.
It makes sense that our workplace should be human, too.
More Than a Company Trip
When we look back on our time at Flaming Gorge, we’ll remember the rafting, the camping, the beautiful scenery, and all the moments that made us laugh.
But we’ll also remember the conversations around the campsite.
The jokes that probably wouldn’t make sense to anyone who wasn’t there.
The moments when someone stepped in to help.
The stories we learned about one another.
And the reminder that behind every professional title is a real person with a life, a personality, a story, and plenty of things to laugh about.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to step away from our normal routines and simply enjoy being together.
Because at Life Empowered Therapy Services, we believe that relationships matter—not just in the work we do with our clients, but in the way we show up for each other.
And sometimes, the best way to strengthen a team is to get outside, get a little wet, sleep in a tent, and take the adventure together.
Here’s to the memories we make, the relationships we build, and the people behind the work.
